文书，作为招生官了解申请者的重要材料，在美国本科大学的申请过程中扮演着至关重要的角色，可谓是 “不见面的面试” ，然而，很多同学可能可以轻松handle托福，可以SAT刷题刷到飞起，亦或者搞活动、做义工如鱼得水，但是遇到写作这个老大难问题，往往面对键盘抓耳挠腮，不知从何写起。
一方面，申请季文书写作的数量巨大，需要提早做好规划和准备；另一方面，要如何在每一篇文书当中恰当地展现自己，吸引招生官的眼球，使自己的申请形象透过文字跃然纸上，这也是决定录取与否的关键因素，有时还可以起到扭转乾坤的效果。
那么，文书到底应该怎样写呢？在开始这个庞大的课题之前，先跟随小编一同来了解一下，申请美国本科留学所需要的文书种类：
CA 主文书
Common Application，美国大学通用申请系统，简称CA申请系统，是目前用于美国大学申请中，最主流、最常用的申请系统。学生需要从七个文书题目中选择一个来写，字数不超过 650 字，但不能少于 250 字。我们来看看这七个文书题目分别是什么：
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
有些学生有非常重要的背景、身份、兴趣或才能，以至于如果没有这些他们的申请就不能算是完整的。如果这正是你的情况，请和我们分享你的故事。
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
从失败和挫折中汲取到的经验教训将是今后成功的基础。请回忆一次你面对挑战、挫折或失败的经历，并讲述那次经历是如何影响你，你从中学到了什么？
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
回忆一次你曾质疑过或挑战过的信念或观点。是什么驱使你有所质疑？结果怎么样？
4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
描述一个你已经解决或者想要解决的问题。这可以是智力挑战，研究调查，道德困境等任何对你来说非常重要的问题，不需要考虑问题的大小。解释它为什么对你如此重要，并描述你是如何一步步寻找解决问题的方法。
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
描述一次成就、事件或领悟，这个过程激发了什么样的成长，对自己、对他人或对外部世界有了全新的理解。
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
描述一个让你迷恋到忘乎时间、茶饭不思的话题、观点或概念。并且说出它为什么如此吸引你，当你想要深入理解时，你会做什么或者会向谁请教？
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
这是一个开放性话题，任选主题写一篇文章，也可以是自己曾经写过的。看似简单，自由发挥，看起来和前六道题都沾边，实则无法捉摸招生官的口味，一不小心可能会翻车。
UC系统文书
UC系统仅用于加州大学系统中九所大学的申请使用，申请人需要从所给的八个题目中任选四个来写，每篇Essay不超过350个词，这八个文书题目分别是：
1、Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
描述你的一次领导经历，可以体现你对他人的积极影响，帮助解决了争端或者是随着时间的推移，对团队的努力做出了贡献。
2、Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
每个人都有具有创造力的一面，它能通过很多方面表现出来：解决问题，原创的创新思维，和在艺术上的创作等。描述你会如何表达你的创造性。
3、What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developedand demonstrated that talent over time?
你最突出的才能或技能是什么？一直以来，你是如何培养并展示这一才能或技能的？
4、Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
描述你曾如何利用某次重大教育机遇或如何努力克服教育障碍的经历。
5、Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
描述你所遇到的最重大挑战。你是如何克服这一挑战？这个挑战又是如何影响了你的学业表现？
6、Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.
思考一门激励你的学科，并且描述你是如何在课内/课外扩展这个学科兴趣的。
7、What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
你对你的学校或者你所在的群体做出了什么贡献，让它变得更好了？
8、Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?

CAAS申请系统主文书
CAAS，全称 Coalitionfor Access, Affordability, and Success，是由哈佛、耶鲁等 83 所美国高校共同创建一个新的大学申请系统，于 2016 年 4 月上线，并于 2017 年投入使用。它的功能和CA相似，文书要求是从五个题目中选一个来回答：
1、Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
请讲述一个你生活中的故事，这段经历是如何呈现你的性格或是塑造的你性格的。
2、Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.
请讲述一件你为他人做过的有意义的事，你如何为他人带来了帮助，并详细讲述期间所遇到的挑战和收获。
3、Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?
有没有那么一刻，你一直坚信不疑的信念受到质疑或挑战？你是如何应对的？这种质疑或挑战有没有动摇你的信念？
4、What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a youngersibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?
你认为作为一个青少年的难处和苦恼是什么？优势和开心的是什么？对于同处于青少年时期的小伙伴或好朋友，你有哪些建议或忠告与他们分享？
5、Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.
请提交一篇文书，题目自拟。
补充文书
除了主文书之外，很多学校还要求学生写补充文书，数量从一篇到几篇不等，补充文书当中，比较常见的题目有：
Why School：你为什么选择这所学校？
Why Major：你为什么选择这个专业？
活动：每个学校关于活动问题的问法不同
此外，还有各种各样的补充文书题目，比如你对学校校训的理解、对大学的期待与规划、领导力的经历、失败和挫折、所属的群体、你的一个“怪癖”、你喜欢的一个作品（书籍、音乐、电影等）、给你未来的室友的一封信等等等等。
艺术作品集中的文书部分
对于申请艺术类院校的学生，艺术作品集当中也需要文书的加持，而对于作品恰当的文字表达往往也是作品集制作时常见的难点之一。
由此可见，申请季需要准备的文书量是非常巨大的，举个例子，假设一个学生申请10所学校（UC系统学校算1所），平均每所学校要求提交3篇补充文书，那么申请季的总文书数量就是三十余篇。不仅是数量上的要求，每一篇文书的质量也需要有保证，如何通过字里行间成功打动招生官，是每一位申请者都将面临的考验。
